How to store silk scarves

Hello from CREASE Studios,

It’s Rosie and Kate here from CREASE Studios! If you’re as in love with silk scarves as we are, you know that taking care of these luxurious accessories is essential to maintaining their beauty and longevity. Silk is a delicate fabric that deserves extra care, and storing your silk scarves correctly can make a big difference in preserving their softness, sheen, and quality. Today, we’re sharing our top tips on how to store silk scarves to keep them looking stunning and ready to wear.

1. Always Clean Your Scarf Before Storing

Before storing your silk scarf, make sure it’s clean. Even if you’ve only worn it briefly, natural oils from your skin, as well as makeup or perfume, can leave residues that may weaken the fabric over time. If you plan to store your silk scarf for an extended period, we recommend giving it a gentle hand wash or taking it to a professional cleaner.

To wash at home, use cold water and a mild, silk-friendly detergent. After rinsing, gently squeeze out the excess water (never wring it!) and lay the scarf flat on a clean towel to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause the colours to fade.

2. Fold, Don’t Hang

While it may be tempting to hang your silk scarf on a hook or hanger, folding is the best way to store it long-term. Hanging silk scarves can stretch the fabric and cause it to lose its shape, especially if the scarf is on the heavier side.

For neat storage, fold your silk scarf along its natural creases. If possible, avoid folding along new lines to minimise the risk of creating permanent creases. If you have multiple scarves, store each one individually to prevent snagging or tangling.

3. Use Acid-Free Tissue Paper for Added Protection

If you’re storing your silk scarf for an extended period, consider wrapping it in acid-free tissue paper. Acid-free tissue paper prevents any potential discolouration or damage to the silk, and it can also help reduce creases.

Simply place the scarf flat on the tissue paper, fold it carefully, and store it in a drawer or storage box. This is a great option if you have vintage or heirloom silk scarves that you want to keep in pristine condition.

4. Keep Scarves in a Breathable Storage Box

Silk is a natural fabric that benefits from ventilation. Instead of plastic bags or airtight containers, which can trap moisture and cause mold, choose a breathable storage box or a fabric-lined drawer for your scarves.

At CREASE Studios, we recommend using boxes made from natural materials, such as cotton or linen, to provide air circulation. This type of storage prevents moisture buildup and keeps your silk scarves fresh, especially in humid climates.

5. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat

Sunlight can cause silk to fade, while heat can weaken its fibers over time. Store your silk scarves in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight or heat sources like radiators. Closets, drawers, or covered storage boxes are ideal locations.

If you want to display your scarves as part of your wardrobe, place them inside a closet with low lighting, or hang them in an area where they won’t receive direct sunlight. Protecting them from light and heat will keep your scarves looking vibrant and new for years to come.

6. Consider Rolling for Minimal Creasing

If you’re looking for an alternative to folding, rolling your silk scarves is another great storage method. Rolling minimizes the risk of creating new creases and helps the scarf maintain its shape.

To roll a silk scarf, lay it flat, smooth out any wrinkles, and carefully roll it into a cylinder. Store the rolled scarf in a drawer, on a shelf, or in a fabric-lined box to keep it safe and ready to wear.

7. Moth Protection: Natural Options

Moths are notorious for damaging natural fabrics like silk, so protecting your scarves from these pests is crucial. Rather than using chemical mothballs, which can be harsh and leave an odor, opt for natural options like cedarwood or lavender sachets.

Place a small sachet in the drawer or box where you store your scarves. These natural moth repellents will keep your scarves safe while adding a pleasant scent to your storage area.
